Originally named "Tacconet" after Chief Taconnet the area was known as "Ticonic" by English settlers.

Incorporated June 23, 1802 because neighboring Winslow residents found it hard to attend town meetings east of the Kennebec river.

Because Ticonic Falls block navigation upriver Waterville became a terminus for surrounding areas and boomed in manufacturing.

This boomed continued with the Ticonic Water Power & Manufacturing Company eventually employing 1,300 local workers. 

Waterville High School is home to the Black Panthers.
